The New Year is the perfect excuse for a new beginning. Healthy eating, getting fit and getting rid of all the bad habits. We are nearly a week in already and I’ve been trying really hard to improve my diet and training program. Seeing as I did nothing before anything is going to be an improvement. It’s going to be a long, hard road but I’m really determined to improve my body shape, eat a better diet and get fit.
I’m really enjoying being focused. It’s a great distraction to the fact it’s the most depressing month of the year. I’ve not even noticed it’s so blue, because I’ve been enjoying planning my training diary and trying out new smoothies with pretty much anything and everything.
It’s easy to go too hard too soon. So I’m trying to ease myself in, so that I don’t get burnt out and get bored within a few weeks. I really want this to be the start of a better more exciting lifestyle. Getting fit means being able to take part in more life activities. Having turned 40 a few weeks ago I’ve got a new energy for enjoying new activities ans joining in with my kids and their training schedules. I can’t do track anymore as my knees are completely finished. Agony to run on them so I have to look at other ways to be cardio fit and burn the calories.
I’m really keen to tone up more then anything. Being strong is also important to me, so I’ll enjoy doing weight training but not to the point where I develop too much muscle.
I’ve been starting off with skipping. Trying to to 10 minutes to start. That doesn’t sounds like much but when your trying to maintain a decent pace it burns pretty quickly. Going thru the burn is all about mental attitude. Do’t be afraid to have a little pain. Obviously not the dangerous type .. more of the muscle burn ( lactic acid ) type.
I’ve been doing conditioning exercises using my body weight. I will slowly introduce small dumbbells but for now I’m doing 3 sets of 20 exercises.
Sit ups, press us, squats, squat thrusts & tricep dips. I’ve been punching pads and a speed ball to get my heart rate up.I’ve done 25 minutes so far and will steadily increase that when I start feeling stronger.

As for my diet I’ve been enjoying smoothies. I’ve stopped eating diary. This is because it really doesn’t work for my body. It’s taken me a long time to discover these things. I wish I knew more when I was competing professionally. I might of found it easier to loose the weight. It was very intense being an athlete and I put a lot of expectations on myself. It’s not an easy world. Dreams are often crushed and you come against people who want to break you. You really have to be tough and strong minded to over come adversity.
I have to say being an athlete set me up with a great determination and resilience. I find it hard to quit.It’s not what I ever did. I only wish I had the knowledge back then.. maybe others might not of been so keen to be so bullying!!! It wasn’t easy fighting for selections, fighting against the weight,  being left out of teams, missing out on championships, injuries and soooo much more.Nothing comes easy and I tell my children this. You have to sometimes fight for what you want. It comes with hard work… years of it!!! Rewards don’t always come straight away. So that’s the same for me now. I have to be patient and accepting that the things I want will take a while to come but if I stick to it I should be ok.
