The New Year is the perfect excuse for a new beginning. Healthy eating, getting fit and getting rid of all the bad habits. We are nearly a week in already and I’ve been trying really hard to improve my diet and training program. Seeing as I did nothing before anything is going to be an improvement. It’s going to be a long, hard road but I’m really determined to improve my body shape, eat a better diet and get fit.
I’m really enjoying being focused. It’s a great distraction to the fact it’s the most depressing month of the year. I’ve not even noticed it’s so blue, because I’ve been enjoying planning my training diary and trying out new smoothies with pretty much anything and everything.
It’s easy to go too hard too soon. So I’m trying to ease myself in, so that I don’t get burnt out and get bored within a few weeks. I really want this to be the start of a better more exciting lifestyle. Getting fit means being able to take part in more life activities. Having turned 40 a few weeks ago I’ve got a new energy for enjoying new activities ans joining in with my kids and their training schedules. I can’t do track anymore as my knees are completely finished. Agony to run on them so I have to look at other ways to be cardio fit and burn the calories.
I’m really keen to tone up more then anything. Being strong is also important to me, so I’ll enjoy doing weight training but not to the point where I develop too much muscle.
I’ve been starting off with skipping. Trying to to 10 minutes to start. That doesn’t sounds like much but when your trying to maintain a decent pace it burns pretty quickly. Going thru the burn is all about mental attitude. Do’t be afraid to have a little pain. Obviously not the dangerous type .. more of the muscle burn ( lactic acid ) type.
I’ve been doing conditioning exercises using my body weight. I will slowly introduce small dumbbells but for now I’m doing 3 sets of 20 exercises.
Sit ups, press us, squats, squat thrusts & tricep dips. I’ve been punching pads and a speed ball to get my heart rate up.I’ve done 25 minutes so far and will steadily increase that when I start feeling stronger.

As for my diet I’ve been enjoying smoothies. I’ve stopped eating diary. This is because it really doesn’t work for my body. It’s taken me a long time to discover these things. I wish I knew more when I was competing professionally. I might of found it easier to loose the weight. It was very intense being an athlete and I put a lot of expectations on myself. It’s not an easy world. Dreams are often crushed and you come against people who want to break you. You really have to be tough and strong minded to over come adversity.
I have to say being an athlete set me up with a great determination and resilience. I find it hard to quit. It’s not what I ever did. I only wish I had the knowledge back then.. maybe others might not of been so keen to be so bullying!!! It wasn’t easy fighting for selections, fighting against the weight,  being left out of teams, missing out on championships, injuries and soooo much more.Nothing comes easy and I tell my children this. You have to sometimes fight for what you want. It comes with hard work… years of it!!! Rewards don’t always come straight away. So that’s the same for me now. I have to be patient and accepting that the things I want will take a while to come but if I stick to it I should be ok.

Join me on my journey. I’m posting lots over on instagram. Maybe we can do it together. Let me know what your doing. Share your training plans here with me. Or great ideas for what to eat etc. Happy workout xx Dawn

Fit for fashion

This is a review of these fab yoga pants and sports bra from M&S. I was asked to review something from the range so I chose these. The bra is a fabulous leopard print so it doesn’t matter if it shows through and the best thing about it is the great support. It feels comfortable and actually something I would wear the whole day. Stops any unwanted movement and feels secure when running or doing anything energetic. It’s smooth and padded so gives a lovely shape when worn with a t-shirt or vest. I’ve worn lots of sports bra’s over the years and I have to say this is one of the best. The yoga pants are soft and comfortable and I ended up wearing them for the day -even just lazing around the house. They are a perfect pair for exercise or leisure. I don’t actually do yoga so I’ve used mine as a legging for running or gym. I love the top panel. A slight distraction from the middle and the print I actually find flattering and even slimming. It kinda gives you a waist. Clothing can be tucked in easily as they are loose which also means the line doesn’t dig into the belly creating an overlap of skin or an empahsis on any bulges. I love the idea of having a relaxed waist band. There’s nothing worse then having a pair of pants that dig in at the waist and create a band between the top and bottom. Two great pieces that make exercise easier and fashionable.

Fluorescent

Pants, New Season Acne ♥ Blouse, New Season H&M ♥ Jumper, New Season Topshop

Thought I’d bring some brightness to the start of my 2012. I bought these pants a few weeks ago, I want to cut the pockets out to give a better shape but with the chaos of xmas I haven’t had the chance. I think they make the hips look too bulky, I’d rather a smoother line but I couldn’t resit getting them all the same.

I’ve mixed soft pastels with a strong florescent jumper for a fresh sporty look. My outfit is inspired by my new zest to getting fit again. I want to do some form of training that I enjoy. It’s been such a long time since I worked out and for some reason I’ve been missing it of late. I think it was sparked by my sprint the other day to catch the departing train home from London. I managed to board it just in time, but for my troubles I had a burning chest for a good half hour.. the alarm bells rang and I realised I really need to get fit again. I also want to generally tone up, oh and try to eat less take out. Having a ditsy waist has always been one of my desires but I’ve never managed to accomplish it. Sometimes it’s just body type. Even when I was training full time for my athletics I couldn’t get tiny, looking back I realised I was a strong woman able to lift weights in league with world class athletes, which I guess was more relevant then my waist measurements. The problem with my training since I quit track is that I get too competitive and want to lift the same weights I did back then and race cars on what’s supposed to be a gentle jog.. ha ha. Well I’m gonna see how it goes and hopefully I’ll find the time to train again.

Good luck to you all in 2012.
